Birth house of Simon Gregorčič
Vrsno
In the village of Vrsno at the foot of Krn, Simon Gregorčič (1844-1906), a priest, poet, translator and national revivalist was born to a family of moderate farmers.
A commemorative museum was opened in 1966 in his birth house, a well-preserved specimen of the architectural heritage of the area.
The late 19th century housing culture of the population living at the foot of Krn is presented on the lower floor.
A retrospective exhibition regarding the poet's life and work, about the time and place where he lived and about the powerful impression that his work left for the future generations, can be viewed on the upper floor.
Rarely were Slovene poets as admired and popular among simple folk already during their own lifetime, and even more so after their death, as Gregorčič. Many of his poems have since been set to music, translated into several languages and become a symbol of national awareness and affiliation, especially among the people of coastal region. His original poetry evoked a considerable response and also influenced a variety of literary circles, all evidenced in the numerous articles and literary works.
