The Tolmin Museum once and now
The Tolmin area, which once included also the Bovec and Kobarid areas, boasts a rich archaeological, ethnological, cultural and historical heritage.
The first Tolmin Museum, located in the Coronini Mansion in Tolmin, was opened to the public in 1951. It was founded with the aim to collect, maintain and represent this rich and diverse national heritage. For a good seven years it functioned as an independent institution. In 1958 it became a part of the Gorica Museum and remained under their auspices as the Tolmin Museum Collection for a full 42 years.
In April 2000 the Tolmin Museum again became an independent public institution that operates in the municipalities of Bovec, Kobarid and Tolmin. It covers the areas of archaeology, ethnology, general history and history of arts.
Its offices are still in the imposing Coronini Mansion in Tolmin's center. In addition to administrative, warehouse and exhibition areas, it houses a thematic library and a marriage hall, which occasionally serves for minor cultural events.
The Tolmin Museum also maintains several external collections and buildings in addition to the collections and exhibitions in the main building. It administrates or supervises the Archaeological Museum and the foundations of the Roman house in Most na Soči, the memorial exhibitions of Simon Gregorčič in Vrsno, of Ciril Kosmač in Slap pri Idrijci and of Simon Rutar in Krn village, the ethnological collections in the TNP (Triglav National Park) Lodge in Trenta, in the town core of Breginj and in Robidišče, the wooden granary in Pečine and the German Ossuary at the confluence of the Soča and Tolminka rivers.
